Step Into Change

Using drum journeys, nature work and spirit dance, this weekend workshop explores the relationship between giving and receiving, both in our own lives and in the world around us. Shamanic practice is based on a deep sense of inter-being, of developing relationships to our Spirit Helpers and offering our gratitude back to them.

In the shamanic worldview, giving and receiving are part of a natural cycle that helps to sustain life. When we are able to give and receive more fully, power flows easily and it is possible to live in balance and harmony. So what do we need in order to move with this cycle? How can we learn to Give without Losing and Receive without Taking? How do we receive the gifts that the Spirits and Life offers to us? How do we share those gifts with the world and give our thanks in return?

From ancient times shamans worked together with Spirits and Nature to ask for healing, power and wisdom. In appreciation of this help, shamans always ask what they can give in exchange. Seen from this perspective, current environmental issues relate to being out of balance, both with the world and within our selves. When the Earth is treated as a resource from which we take what we want without offering anything in return, the cycle is broken.

There are simple and powerful ways to re-learn how to live in relationship. By awakening a feeling of connection, giving no longer seems like a sacrifice but becomes an act of mutual benefit. Receiving becomes a natural source of nourishment. In this way, the cycle of reciprocity helps to heal both the Earth and ourselves.
