FOREST SEIDR - Craft and Power

Seiðr, an old Nordic form of shamanism, is the source of inspiration for this course. Traditionally, the practitioners of seiðr used a unique combination of staff, ecstatic song and magic seat as means for contacting the spirit world. seiðr is described in written sources from late Viking age, but originates much earlier in fertility cults and shamanism.

On this course, we will explore both the craft and the power of the seiðr tradition. We will work with the main tools of staff and song, and practise seiðr together as a community ritual as well as in pairs and alone.

In the seiðr tradition we find refined time-tested ways of dealing with power; we will explore the mystical concept of ergi, a way of handling energy through the shamanic union of surrender and clear intent. We can learn directly from the power as it runs through the staff, wells up from the earth, and rides on our song. In this way we strengthen an essential aspect of all our shamanic practice: Knowing how to let power flow through us, how to apply it wisely, how to ground it.

The spiritual core of seiðr is inseparable from nature. Therefore, a key part of our practice is connecting with the spirits and powers of the land: “Sitting out” alone with our staff among hills and trees, singing with dusk and wind, our seiðr work takes root in our own landscape and time.  To deepen our understanding of the tradition we will also view our own experiences in the light of the newest research into Norse myths and worldview, which contain so much more than the few well known divinities.

Seiðr work is for both men and women, and can profoundly inspire our general shamanic practice: We become freer to choose the right ritual tool for the right task, and we deepen our experience of the power of earth.

To participate you must have clear contact with your spirit allies or –teachers, and have completed introductory course The Shaman’s Journey or agreed equivalent. You must also be able to fully understand Danish. Good preparation for seidr is singing, shamanic counselling, finding your staff, or befriending a powerplace in nature.
